Abstract
A study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of phage typing of nontypable staphylococci by growth in a medium containing acridine orange, some, basic experiments were carried out, and the possible mechanisms of the action of acridine orange were discussed, with the following results. Approximately 58. 1 per cent of such strains tested become typable when nontypable strains were grown on a medium containing 5mg/ml. of acridine, orange. Strains showing inhibition phenomenon to some phages became to have full sensitivity to these phages after exposed to acridine orange.
Most of the strains became reactive for phages of single or two groups. Among 25 strains converted to typable ones 23 strains were lysogenic and nontypable. Acridine orange increased the curing rates of prophage in lysogenic strain. Nontypable strains which converted to typable ones by growth in a .medium containing acridine orange showed the increased rates of phage adsorption, and the ability to form the plaques for which the strains become sensitive, as compared with the original ones.
